Methodological Approach for the Evaluation of Litter: Ankara City

Abstract :

In 11 different sites of Ankara city, litter in streets and sidewalks was photographed 50 meter apart in 360 sections each covering 1m². The litter in 1m² is categorized as wet or dry package, paper, plastic and glass, metal and organic which have been disposed to streets and sidewalks and quantified in terms of number and mass. The results indicate that majority of the litter in Ankara City is paper with 59.34%. Other found litters were, organic matter (%17.17), plastic (%14.76), glass (%6.02) and metal (%2.71). There are 3.17 pieces of litter each square meter, which makes the city “not clean” with the index value of 3. The mass of litter calculation the surfaces was around 12 gram per square meter in Ankara.
