A MICROCONTROLLER BASED CONFIGURABLE PROTECTION RELAY TO PROTECT THE EQUIPMENTS AGAINST SINGLE PHASE AC-LINE FAULTS

In this work a microcontroller based working prototype of a configurable fault protection relay was designed and implemented. Here a multi-functional relay was implemented for the purpose of single phase online fault detection to protect the electrical equipments against over-voltage, over-current and under-voltage faults. The developed system is highly responsive, highly rugged, configurable, economical and user friendly. The threshold values for these cut-offs were made configurable and could be altered through some dedicated push buttons. The system keeps on scanning the fault parameters continuously on time shared basis and keeps on comparing the current/ voltage reference values with that of the measured instantaneous current/voltage values and takes the decision automatically to trip-off the relay immediately for any of these limits crossed. Hardware prototype using low power, low cost, high performance STM eight-bit microcontroller validated the work.
